After months of leaks, rumors, and speculation, Apple has finally launched its first-ever foldable iPhone. And no, it’s not called the iPhone Ultra. Apple is calling it the “iPhone Duo,” and it brings a completely new design to the iPhone lineup. As a reminder, the company also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro models at the same launch event.
Apple enters foldable smartphone race with the iPhone Duo
The iPhone Duo opens up to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display, giving users a much larger canvas for gaming, watching content, and multitasking. When folded, it switches to a 5.4-inch outer display that keeps the phone compact and pocketable.
Both displays use Super Retina XDR technology with ProMotion, Always-On functionality, and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness. Apple has also added a nano-texture finish to the inner display to reduce glare and make the crease less noticeable.
The phone is built from Grade 5 titanium, with Ceramic Shield protection and an IP68 rating. Apple says its precision hinge uses more than 100 components and is designed to keep the inner display supported when opened.
A20 Pro powers Apple’s first foldable
Under the hood, the iPhone Duo packs Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor chamber for improved thermal management. Apple claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The camera setup includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra-Wide camera, and an integrated 2x optical-quality Telephoto option. The foldable design also enables features like Smart Take, Duo Preview, and Dual Capture. Apple is also reshaping iOS 27 around the larger screen. Users can run two apps side by side, open two windows of the same app, and save app pairs for quick access.
Pricing and availability
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US and comes with storage options up to 2TB. Pre-orders begin October 16, while availability starts October 23. Apple is offering the foldable in Star White and Night Sky. After years of watching Samsung and others dominate the foldable market, Apple has finally entered the fight.
