While Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 is grabbing all the positive reviews since its launch, Apple, on the other hand, has its answer on the way: the iPhone Ultra. Although Apple has not officially confirmed its first foldable iPhone, popular indider and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says that early testers are impressed by several parts of the device.
Gurman says people who have handled the device especially like how easily it fits into a pocket. The hinge also reportedly feels durable, while the larger inner display offers new iPad-like app layouts for multitasking.
iPhone Ultra could trade camera hardware for a thinner design
Per the report, the camera could become one of the biggest compromises, though. The foldable is expected to use two 48-megapixel rear cameras, with a main sensor paired with an ultrawide lens. A dedicated telephoto camera is reportedly missing.
The reported camera decision appears connected to Apple’s push for an extremely thin body. Gurman says the phone could measure around 4.5mm when unfolded, leaving less room for additional camera hardware.
Apple is also reportedly bringing back Touch ID through the side button. That would replace the in-display Face ID system found on recent iPhones.
The foldable is expected to feature a 5.5-inch outer display and roughly 7.8-inch inner display. Previously, Gurman also pointed to an iPad-like interface when the phone is opened.
The price could make the missing telephoto more noticeable
Apple’s first foldable is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9. Pricing could start around $2,000 and potentially exceed $2,500 with higher storage. That makes the missing telephoto camera a more noticeable compromise, especially for buyers expecting an Ultra-level camera setup.
It will be interesting to see whether the experience offered to buyers will justify the premium price once the iPhone Ultra finally becomes official.
