Google yesterday kicked off the rollout of its first Android 16 Quarterly Platform Release 2 (QPR2) developer beta, setting the stage for the next wave of updates to its mobile OS. This release is aimed at developers, but it also hints at the big features headed to users later this year.

What’s New in Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1

According to Google VP Matthew McCullough, QPR2 Beta 1 is designed to enhance the experience across all form factors, from phones to foldables and tablets. The update introduces fresh APIs for productivity, media, and creative expression, alongside tools that improve developer workflows.

While today’s drop is focused on under-the-hood changes, there are a few notable features already confirmed. These include:

  • Expanded Dark Mode that intelligently adjusts apps with light UIs.

  • Auto-themed app icons for a more consistent look.

  • A new data transfer API that improves cross-platform migrations.
  • PDF editing support is built directly into the system.

Google shook up its release cycle with Android 16, which launched in June in an unfinished state. Instead of packing everything into one major release, the company is spreading its biggest features across quarterly updates.

QPR1 is still pending with features like Live Updates (Google’s take on Apple’s Dynamic Island), new Material Expressive 3 UI tweaks, and a DeX-like desktop mode. Those are expected in September, while QPR2 should follow later with a more polished desktop experience and wider support for third-party apps.

Timeline and Availability

The Android 16 QPR2 beta program began yesterday and will run until the final public release in Q4 2025. If you’re a Pixel owner, you can enroll starting now. On the other hand, developers can also test through the Android Emulator in Android Studio. Google will roll out interim updates over the coming months with new SDK tools and system images.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that Google has also made the Pixel 10 series official alongside the Pixel Watch 4 and Buds 2a. If you missed the live stream yesterday, head over to our Pixel 10 launch event roundup for a quick recap.
